The holidays are coming to an end and pupils are returning to school after a long absence. Now the focus is very much on the right hygiene solution in schools. We have some advice for you.
Loss of learning leads to massive economic consequences
The closure of schools across Europe for weeks has had a huge impact on the education and potentially even the careers of the pupils affected. Not only do they have to face a lack of knowledge caused by missing vital weeks of schooling, according to a study of the Ifo Institute, the lack of learning will add up to a total economic loss of 5.4 trillion euros in later working life only in Germany.
This makes it all the more important for pupils to get back to regular schooling as soon as possible. In order to prevent schools from closing again, governments and the educational institutions are currently working on hygiene solutions for schools.
According to the World Health Organization, the following points can help to increase the safety of students, teachers and staff in schools and stop the spread of infections:
- Students, teachers and other staff who show signs of a flu-like illness should not come to school.
- Schools should encourage social distancing by staggering the start and the end of classes, canceling meetings, sports games and other events. Furthermore, tables should be moved at least 1,5 metres apart.
- Regular ventilation or open windows ensure air exchange in rooms and reduce the concentration of viruses in the classroom.
- Classrooms and especially sanitary facilities must be cleaned and sanitised at least once a day, especially surfaces that are touched by many people, including railings, tables, sports equipment, door and window handles, as well as teaching and learning materials.
- Teachers should be trained to respond to students' questions and concerns.
- Hanging child-friendly materials such as posters on bulletin boards, in toilets and other central places helps to raise awareness of the importance of personal hygiene.
- Students should be encouraged to wash their hands regularly.
Schools should also give students the opportunity to sanitise their hands regularly. Here is a guide where best to place hand sanitisers.
