When it comes to sustainability, GOJO Industries, manufacturer of the PURELL® hygiene solution, has always taken responsibility. Since our foundation 75 years ago, we have made every effort to act in an environmentally friendly and resource-saving way. And we have already achieved a lot, but not enough. After each milestone that we reach, we set ourselves even greater sustainability goals for the future.
GOJO reduces CO2 emissions
Top priority of our sustainability strategy is to drastically reduce our contribution to climate change. We have already made enormous progress here. For example, we have reduced CO2 emissions from heating our buildings and from combustion processes in the production of our hygiene solutions by 46 percent since 2010. We were able to achieve this goal by changing the formulation of our products. These days we produce our hygiene products at lower temperatures. That saves a lot of energy.
Another of our most important goals was to run our American distribution facility with renewable energy alone. In 2018, we built a solar system with 1,800 panels for this purpose. With that energy in combination with some renewable electricity from the grid, we succeeded in achieving our objective in 2020. However, our energy needs skyrocketed in the same year due to the huge demand for our hygiene solutions. That’s why we want to open up more sustainable energy sources for our plant.
Energy consumption successfully reduced
Simultaneously, we continued to effectively reduce our energy consumption in our headquarters. And here sometimes even small measures have great effects. For example, we have replaced tens of thousands of energy-guzzling lights and lamps in our buildings with more energy-efficient light sources.
However, we are not stopping there. We are constantly looking for ways to embed sustainability more strongly in our company and in our everyday lives. One important lever for a manufacturing company like ours is, of course, the production of sustainable products. And here, too, we can point out to a number of successes.
GOJO's definition of sustainability: resource-efficient products
This year, we will launch an innovative touch-free dispenser system equipped with ENERGY-ON-THE-REFILL™ technology. Compared to other contactless dispensers on the market, the system reduces battery waste by 68 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions by 15 per cent. The secret behind it: each refill pack comes with an integrated button cell battery that lasts until the refill pack is totally emptied. That makes proactive battery changes unnecessary.
As a PURELL customer, rest assured that you will hear about further sustainability successes in the future. We are already working diligently on new sustainability strategies. GOJO is dedicated to saving lives and improving them. This mission also includes taking care of our environment.
Stay healthy!
